A.I. can be an incredibly powerful tool when used properly. Universities, research labs and hospitals are using A.I. right now to speed up research and find solutions to medical conditions in months not years, but there are some huge caveats to it. While it can be very useful it’s mostly wasted on things like summaries of emails, generated pictures, videos and music; and increasingly, a place to validate opinions and biases. There’s enormous amounts of water and electricity used. Per day a medium sized data centre can use more than 5000 times the amount of water and 50,000 times the electricity as you and I. I’ll call for a moratorium on A.I. data centres that take our water, strain our electric grid and who’s main function is to collect our data to train newer, more power thirsty A.I. models.
